Zea touring in january and february
Zea is a breakpop mono from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Armed with guitar, mic, drum machines, sampler and synths, Arnold de Boer comes with fast-paced programmed drums, copious synth work, guitars that go from jangly to strummy on a moment’s notice, and vocals that chant as much as they sing; 8-bit electronic sounds exploding all over the place, and at the same time a poptune isn't out of the question either.
Live is Zea fast and vicious, putting rock and roll into electronics, and pushing noisy loops into beat punk. Zea released four albums and many singles. The last two albums were released, especially for an Ethiopian tour, on cassette. In 2009 Zea released a 7” EP containing 7 songs, called “We Better Boil Soup of the Grown-Ups”, in December 2009 Zea released “Super Cosmotics” a second 7” (both on his own Makkum Records), and the new album is released just now. After “Kowtow to an Idiot” (2000), “Today I Forgot To Complain” (2003) and “Insert Parallel Universe” (2006), “The Beginner” (2010/Vinyl Version will come out in January 2011) is number four.

This is what happens when you give a troubled youth recording equipment. I don't know what it is that's happening in Noordwijkerhout, but there's a lot of stuff coming out of Next to Jaap's Studio that is worth paying attention to. Next up, ZEA, who is, for want of a better word, insane. Clearly, clynically, certifiably insane. God bless him. The Beginner is an incredible record. Oh it's incredibly bonkers, that's for sure, but it's so bloody energetic, so bull headed and so schizophrenic in its approach to crafting a tune that you simply can't fail to be impressed by it. Fancy going to "the place where donkeys grow?" Of course you do. Want to hear somebdy ranting about the energy crisis? That's here. Want to know what armpit elastica is? Step on board. You may not like it all, or find all of it pleasant to listen to but I'm not sure that's the point of it. I'm not entirely sure what the point is, to be completely honest with you but every time I try to explain this record to somebody I can't stop myself from laughing. ZEA: THE BEGINNER (makkum) Wie schön: ein Anfänger! Genau das Richtige fur ein frisches Jahr, in dem wir den Kompass wieder neu setzen und nochmal von vorne anfangen. Diese herrlich erfrischende Schnittmenge aus Punk-Wave und Electro-Vibes lasst mich an einen Buzzcocks-PopGroup-Bastard durch den Grime-Wolf gedreht denken. Der lauft aber ziemlich gut und hat jede Menge schrag-sarkastischen Humor huckepack - genau das Futter, das wir 2011 brauchen werden. We've got a crisis, we've got a crisis, and we dance to the sound of sirens. Dazu gibt's einen elektrifizierten Bourgeois Blues, der sogar Leadbelly zum Grinsen bringen konnte. Into the future, lads! Zea kiffe l'Afrique. L'Éthiopie surtout. Et ça s'entend. Ça se comprend aussi. Aux manettes de ce projet, c'est le Hollandais Arnold De Boer, l'actuel frontman de The Ex, remplaçant de Sok parti vers d'autres aventures. D'abord en duo, il se retrouve seul sur ce disque, The Beginner, où il envoie une techno-pop cosmopolite, très rock dans ses entournures et au final relève d'une fascinante énigme : comment fait-il pour foutre un tel bordel à lui tout seul. C'est déroutant !
Sans blaguer, ce Zea est un cas. Et son disque est au diapason.
Sorti d'une première écoute, les oreilles encore frétillantes de tous ces sons agencés suivant les préceptes D.I.Y. immémoriaux - ouais à l'arrache c'est ça ! - on aurait pourtant tort de le ranger dans le carton des bricolos arty, un carcan bien trop étriqué pour ce genre d'expérimentations. Voilà un disque, qui s'il est attractif, parce que profondément mélodique, rythmiquement habité - l'Afrique, la Vieille Europe s'y télescopent allègrement - et carrément bluffant, il est aussi un grand disque pervers, capable de bousculer pour peu que le temps d'immersion de l'auditoire soit suffisant (je vous assure qu'on ne se relève pas sans séquelles d'un titre comme Dat is Net Samoai).
The Beginner est de ces albums basés sur la rencontre des extrêmes, une boucle entre le soleil et l'ombre, la grosse marrade et la rage militante. Et finalement à force d'écoutes, c'est quand on ne sait plus trop vraiment où ce gars veut nous embarquer, perdu perché qu'il nous laisse avec autour du cou la corde qu'il a noué pour nous, que tout fait sens. Aux antipodes de l'ordinaire, entre réalité et surprise, repose un antidote à la morosité ambiante. Zea en connait la formule et n'entend pas se la garder pour lui seul. Un beau geste ma foi ! In Maart nog heb ik gezegd dat Zea een van de leukste, beste en meest explosieve Nederlandse bands of tegenwoordig gewoon het eenmansproject van Arnold de Boer is. En ik mag niet liegen. Toen is er namelijk een split-single verschenen met Kanipchen-Fit en tevens een 7inch van The Ex waar Arnold tegenwoordig de zanger van is. Mede bandlid Remko Muermans is jaren geleden achtergebleven in Rusland (ik dacht altijd Afrika, maar enfin). In zijn uppie redt Arnold zich prima getuige de voorgaande singles van Zea. Maar goed 4 jaar na Insert Parallel Universe komt Zea nu met de vierde cd The Beginner. Het klinkt vreemd om 'beginner' en Arnold de Boer naast elkaar te zetten, maar wellicht duidt dit op zijn nieuwe begin als solo artiest en door het feit dat hij toch een nieuw geluid neerzet mede door zijn reizen naar Afrika. Wat gebleven is zijn die energieke muziekuitspattingen vol humor (luister alleen al naar '20 cent'), die hij met gitaar, zang, elektronica en samples neerzet. De pakkende zang en (soms bijtende) teksten worden omringd door stuiterende beats, snerpende gitaren, Afrikaanse elementen (songthema's, stemsamples, duimpiano geluiden) en andere vrolijke uptempo klanken. Toch is de algehele tendens melancholisch, alleen wordt dat prachtig verhuld door de hoge snelheid van de muziek die als een TGV doordendert. Qua locatie en tijd moet je muziek ergens tussen Afrika de VS, Nederland en Mars van 1984 tot ongeveer 2084 plaatsen. Ik heb de muziek wel eens een 'hokjesvrije vulkaan vol lavende lava aan dynamisch geluid' genoemd, maar gezien de huidige IJslandse perikelen zie ik de asbui alweer hangen als ik dat nu roep. Het helpt waarschijnlijk ook niet als ik zeg dat de muziek ergens uitkomt tussen combinaties van Der Plan, Pascal Plantinga, 1-Speed Bike, Kid606, Dntel, The Fall, The Ex, Atari Teenage Riot, Abonesh Adenew, Mahmoud Ahmed, Wire, Add N To (X), Cabaret Voltaire, Joy Division en Jason Forrest. Als popcorn zonder deksel op de pan ploppen de geluiden spontaan alle kanten op, soms geheel ongecontroleerd maar altijd met een smakelijk en vol resultaat. Just like the artist in whose honor the band is named, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp likes to mess with the conventions of pop just as much as the Dadaist Duchamp liked to mess with the conventions of art. This Geneva-based, six-piece band (consisting of former members of Dog Faced Hermans, Spaceheads, Headache, CreveCoeur) crafts pop tunes, but not without tearing them apart through vocalist Liz's shriekings, erratic drum bangings, uncommon instruments, noise erruptions, … They fuse the wild and free attitude of post punk with tropical and afrobeat vibes. Blasting trombones, skillfully played marimba, screaming vocals, roaring guitars.
The sensibility of Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp is post-punk, and the instrumentation is appropriately bizarre - trombone, marimba, fiddle, guitar, drums and double-bass. This Swiss band is surreal in the true sense: more than art, it's a way of life; of living on the edge of your senses. The players perform with a conviction that, in other circumstances, would be dedicated to fringe religion. Very romantic. Very subversive. Very Gallic.

Der Dadaist und Aktionskünstler hätte wahrscheinlich seine helle Freude an der Band aus der Schweiz gehabt. Liz Moscorola, Anne Cardinaud, Seth Bennet, Wilf Plum, Mael Salettes und Vincent Bertholet vereinen Marimba, Kontrabass, Geige, Gitarre, Schlagzeug in einem energiegeladenen Konglomerat aus Afrobeat und Post-Punk.

Zea/Kanipchen Fit Split 7"
This 7" was especially released for the Balkan tour Zea and Kanipchen-Fit did in November / December 2009. Zea put on "Song for Electricity", a twenty first century eclectric version of the Ethiopian song "Bogiye" (Abonesh Adenew), and takes his cellphone synth to the next level in "Ich hab ein Riesenkopf". www.zea.dds.nl
Kanipchen-Fit comes with a debut release of two songs showing their unsentimental sound and ironic lyrics in less than five minutes. Based in NYC, they plan to enter Europe again in spring 2010 with a full length album. www.myspace.com/kanipchenfit.

Arnold de Boer, mit dem zweiten, limitierten Release auf seinem hauseigenen Label. Wenn er nicht mit THE EX auf der Bühne steht tourt er grade mit KANIPCHEN-FIT durch die Lande. ZEA ist auf diesem Release wieder nicht zu bremsen. Neben unzähligen Samples, elektronischen Effekten, Gitarre und Arnolds Gesang verwendet er für „Song for electricity“ als Grundgerüst den äthiopischen Song „Bogiye“ von Abonesh Andrew. „Ich hab ein Riesenkopf“ ist ebenfalls mit einer äthiopischen Weise unterlegt, wird aber von wirren, fast nervtötenden Handyklingeltönen geradezu abgewürgt. Das Amsterdamer Duo KANIPCHEN-FIT besteht aus Gloria Holwerda-Williams und Empee Williams. Beide reichern ihren zweistimmigen Gesang mit Percussions, Gitarre und elektronischen Effekten an. Sehr alternativ, sehr Indie, ein bisschen emotional und ergreifend. Sie erinnern mich an die TRAVELS und bilden einen vorzüglichen Kontrast zu ZEA. (Jenny Kracht)
